Space: 2099 is poised for a comeback.

ITV Studios America and HDFILMS announced plans for a re-imagining of Gerry and Sylvia Anderson’s famed franchise of the 1970s, then called Space: 1999. The news comes months after Fox and producer Seth MacFarlane announced they would be reviving Cosmos: A Space Time Odyssey, a 1980s miniseries from Carl Sagan.

Patrick Sean Smith, who created the ABC Family show Greek, is jumping into features. Smith has been tapped to write Bone, Warner Bros.’ adaptation of the cult-favorite Jeff Smith comic book that now has P.J. Hogan attached to direct.

Dan Lin of Lin Pictures and Animal Logic are producing the adaptation of the fantasy series, the rights to which Warners picked up in 2008. Continue reading

BBC America Orders Five More Nerdist Specials

The cable network has ordered five more specials of The Nerdist, based on Hardwick’s popular podcast of the same name. The announcement comes weeks after the pilot for the show, hosted by Hardwick and featuring Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and Craig Ferguson, aired in September as part of the network’s newly launched “Ministry of Laughs” comedy block.

The five specials, two 60-minute episodes and three half-hours, will air all through next year, timed to major network events. The first will air on Christmas Eve at 9 p.m. as a one-hour year-end review of pop culture, tech trends and more. Continue reading

River Phoenix’s Final Film to Be Released After 18 Years (Exclusive)

Eighteen years after the sudden death of actor River Phoenix, Dutch director George Sluizer says he will finish Dark Blood, the 1993 drama that Phoenix was shooting when he died of a heart attack on Halloween night outside the Viper Room in Los Angeles.

After Phoenix’s death, apparently of a drug overdose, Sluizer took the original Dark Blood footage and kept it hidden fearing, he says, it would be destroyed. The director has now re-edited the material and believes with a few adjustments – using voice over for instance – he can now deliver a final cut of the film for release next year. Continue reading
