Box Office Buzz
From superheroes to super spies, from hobbits to bow-and-arrow wielding heroines, 2012 was quite an epic year at the box office. It’s been a while since I remember so many good movies being packed into one year, and I had a difficult time narrowing down my list of favorites. Normally one film will rise to the top and emerge as my clear favorite (last year, Michael Fassbender’s breakout performance as Magneto in “X-Men: First Class” pushed that film to the top of my list). But this year, I had to spend a long time deciding what films I liked the best.
In terms of ticket sales, superheroes were the clear winners at the box office, with Joss Whedon’s epic mash-up “The Avengers” leading the pack. Arguably the most-hyped movie of the year, the film also was the biggest moneymaker, pulling in about $1.5 billion and ending up in the third slot on the list of all-time highest grossing films. It received a thumb’s up from critics, as well, scoring 92 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Continue reading

On the one hand it is ridiculous that it has taken this long for Mattel to get around to making an action figure of the second-most-important living character in the Batman mythos. On the other hand, Mattel just released a figure of a frigging butler.
Looking at it from that latter perspective, it’s actually pretty amazing that this figure exists at all. Making a figure of a character that literally does nothing but stand around and talk is pretty risky, so kudos to Mattel for doing it.
Oh, Bane, you cinematic enigma.
Are you from the Caribbean? Is your mask keeping you alive? Will you use Venom at all? What’s up with that jacket that makes you look like Tom Selleck from Quincy Down Under? Or do I mean Steven Segal from On Deadly Ground? Holy cow – a Michael Caine connection! Is there something in his contract where his costars have to wear sheepskin sometimes? And most importantly Mr. Bane – why the heck aren’t you wearing a luchador mask?
Okay, time for a new column.
This poster (via SuperHeroHype) really gets my design senses tingling. Peter Parker casting the spider logo shadow is the perfect image for (yet another) origin story.
The ever-secretive Christopher Nolan has recruited another Inception veteran for this climactic chapter in his Bat-odyssey. But who could the fleet-footed Gordon-Levitt be playing?
This is becoming an almost weekly game: “Who will the villains be? Who’s gonna get cast? This person got cast, but not as a villain we expected.” While some might think this a futile endeavor, trying to forecast what Nolan’s going to do and who he’s going to get to do it, I choose to see it as something of a challenge. As Spock would say, “Sauce for the goose.” Can anyone say “Robin”

Via EW.com – Warner Bros. announced via press release this morning that director Christopher Nolan has cast Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle in his third and final Batman opus The Dark Knight Rises. For those who don’t know their Batman lore, Selina Kyle is Catwoman’s alter-ego, although curiously, the press release makes no mention of the word “Catwoman.” And in something of a surprise, Nolan also announced today that his Inception actor Tom Hardy will play the villain Bane, a more recent addition to Batman’s storied rogues gallery. Thoughts?
It has been officially announced that the third Christopher Nolan Batman film will be titled, The Dark Knight Rises. The director also revealed that the main villain will NOT be The Riddler. That just narrows down the list to 549 potential characters from the Batman rogues gallery! Like the second film, Nolan will film some sequences in IMAX, but no 3D. The film is still scheduled to be released in July, 2012.
