James Cameron has been brainstorming that next Terminator movie

There’s both good news and bad news about the next Terminator movie, and the good news involves none other than James Cameron.

According to Deadline, the development process for Terminator 5 has been moving along, with producers hoping to put the film into production by the end of 2012, Arnold Schwarzenegger returning to the franchise and action director du jour Justin Lin (Fast Five) getting behind the camera.

But a line near the end of the Deadline piece also mentions that Terminator creator James Cameron has been in “a brainstorming meeting or two” with Schwarzenegger and Lin. While this is not a complete surprise based on earlier comments made by Lin, it also sounds like Cameron could be getting more involved in the project.

Now that he’s through with politics and looking to get back into movies, Arnold Schwarzenegger appears to be on the brink of returning to his most famous role.

According to Deadline, a proposal for a new Terminator film, featuring Schwarzenegger in the iconic role that made him a superstar, was circulated to all the major studios in Hollywood on Tuesday afternoon. Although there is no script or even screenwriter involved yet—because, after all, who cares whether there’s a story or not?—director Justin Lin is attached to get behind the camera after he finishes enjoying the coming box-office success of Fast Five.

Ever since the former governor of California left office, there’s been reams of speculation as to how he’d re-enter the pop culture landscape. Now the question of “What’s next for Arnold Schwarzenegger?” has been answered. Boy, has it ever been answered.

As revealed on Entertainment Weekly’s PopWatch blog, the onetime reigning king of the box office is joining forces with the co-creator of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and Iron Man to hatch The Governator, an animated series and comic book that will follow an ex-governor who decides to take up a career in crime fighting. Lee explains further:

“The Governator is going to be a great superhero, but he’ll also be Arnold Schwarzenegger. … We’re using all the personal elements of Arnold’s life. We’re using his wife [Maria Shriver]. We’re using his kids. We’re using the fact that he used to be governor. Only after he leaves the governor’s office, Arnold decides to become a crime fighter and builds a secret high-tech crime-fighting center under his house in Brentwood.”
