Mike, Mike, Jen, and The Phantom Troublemaker continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who by traveling back to where it all began! And thanks to writer/producer Mark Gatiss, we don’t need a TARDIS to do it. The ESW crew reviews the docudrama that re-enacts the birth of a phenomenon. Plus, we Rant & Rave about other news and events in the DWU.
It’s the most wonderful time of the year! Also, the most stressful. In the never-ending battle to fight the holiday blues, the ESO crew steps up once again to provide some gift ideas for the geek in your life. To make things easier, you can find just about every item suggested by Mike, Mike, the award-winning author Bobby Nash, Doctor Q, and Nikki Rau-Baker in the ESO Amazon Estore. Listen, click, and you’re done wish shopping for the year! Plus, we give author Stuart Jaffe the greatest gift of all… some time in The Geek Seat! All this, along with the usual Rants, Raves, Khan Report and Shout Outs!

This blog contains spoilers. Proceed with caution, sweeties!
- As a River Song fan, may of us were going in looking for any hints that she may come back. While the plot focused on the Doctor’s struggle to destroy Gallifrey and the Daleks — as well as his decision to change his mind — there were small touches that made many River fans happy.
- When surrounded in the forest, the 10th and 11th Doctors point their sonic screwdrivers like weapons. The War Doctor asks if they’re planning to build a cabinet, a joke River Song threw at Eleven when they were fighting the Silence in Day of the Moon.
- Eleven takes to defacing part of the Tower of London to leave a clue to their location, much like River defacing a cliff face in The Pandorica Opens.
- As people pass through the Black Archive, there’s a quick shot of River’s red heels from Time of Angels. [Dangerous weapons, indeed!]
- When Ten asks Eleven how he could forget the staggering amount of casualties in the Time War, Eleven utters “spoilers” instead of answering the question.
- The War Doctor ponders if there are many more marriages in his future. Eleven confirms this — although his marriage to River wasn’t a ruse to prove she was an alien life form. [Well done, Ten!]
- When Eleven meets the Curator, River Song’s wedding theme is played. This musical cue was also used when Eleven spoke to River Song’s data ghost at Trenzalore.
All these moments reinforce my theory that she may be back at Christmas for Eleven’s regeneration. The Silence played a huge role in her life–from her separation from her parents to her backwards timeline with the Doctor–and her connection to Clara in The Name of the Doctor has still not been explained. We’ve got a little under a month to see how this will play out and if she’ll meet the newest Doctor. Now, what number he’s supposed to be–12, 13, 14?–is a completely different matter altogether.
Rachel Stewart has been obsessed about all things pop culture from an early age, but countsDoctor Who and Jem and the Holograms among her main obsessions. She blogs about her cosplay adventures at conventions, weekly geek-inspired outfits and whatever else takes her fancy at her blog notprolificnotprofound.
Happy Hunger Games! This week, ESO crew was selected to compete in the podcasting arena. Jennifer Hartshorn from the Higher-Learning District dominated her opponents Mike Faber (Info Tech District), Mike Gordon (Tiki District), Bobby Nash (Award-Winning District), and Ashley Bergner (Blogger District). However, all the tributes participate in the tour of the popular books and movies. We also chat with Forgotten Realms writer, Richard Lee Byers, who must come up with more than The Q Word for The Geek Seat. May the odds be in his favor! Plus, a huge rave for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary along with the usual Khan Report and Shout Outs!

After 50 years, The Doctor finally had his day and what a day it was! After the record-breaking global broadcast, the ESW crew celebrated the 50th anniversary with an event co-hosted with TimeGate Convention, Doctor Who: The Forgotten Doctor and DragonCon British Media Track. Mike, Mike, Jen, and the Phantom Troublemaker had a blast sharing initial reactions to The Day of The Doctor special along with the award-winning author Bobby Nash, Beau Brown, Kirby Bartlett-Sloan, and the main man of the night, Alan Siler. It was an added bonus to hang out with many friends and fans throughout the evening. So much fun, it should be an annual holiday!
Friend of the station, author I. A. Watson, shared his essay on “The Name of the Doctor”, “The Night of the Doctor”, “The Day of the Doctor” and “The Five(ish) Doctors Rebooted” with ESO.
It should go without saying, but just in case, there are SPOILERS ahead for “The Name of the Doctor”, “The Night of the Doctor”, “The Day of the Doctor” and “The Five(ish) Doctors Rebooted”. You’ve been warned.
Take it away, I.A. Watson…

So, after a month of waiting, the eighth episode of ‘Terminus’ is now finally finished and available for you! Many, many apologies, of course, but now that I’m finally past all the travel and the consequent illness (the derby tournament equivalent of con crud, methinks), I’m hoping I can start to get things back on track (I’ve had to juggle my schedule a bit though, so I’ll be doing more anniversary episodes after the 50th!). Anyway, I’m hoping just after I post this to record the next episode about ‘The Silver Nemesis’, though it might be out after the 50th special at this rate (which I will also be doing an episode on, of course — don’t worry!). Oh, and being as I recorded this a month ago, some of the news-y, ‘Happy Fandom Time’ stuff is a bit dated, so sorry about that! *embarrassed*
Anyway, join me on this episode as I chat about ‘The Five Doctors’. Also I chat about the new Second Doctor episodes found (yes, this episode was recorded that long ago!), the ‘Day of the Doctor’ teaser trailer, some local ‘Day of the Doctor’ celebratory stuff, and other things making me happy in fandom right now. Oh, and apparently every time I refer to the Big Finish audio ‘An Earthly Child’ in this episode, I sound like I’m saying ‘Unearthly Child’, which is a bit funny. Oops! Sorry about that! I hope I don’t confuse you too-too much!
So, anyway, as always, glad to have you aboard and enjoy the ride!
JC and Rita are back with a Whovian spectacular for Doctor Who’s golden anniversary. First, they have a panel with Articles of the Shadow Proclamation and Doctor Geek’s Scott Vigue, Earth Station One’s Mike Faber and Bobby Nash, as well as Earth Station Who and Needless Things’ The Phantom Troublemaker. Later, they chat with DragonCon Media Director, Seriously Dan Host and Senior Director of Promotions for RetroRailCon Dan Carroll. The subject – 50 years of Doctor Who. How did we get started watching Doctor Who? What impact does 50 years have…and of course – what’s going to happen in Day of the Doctor? Join us for this amazingly fun podcast!
