Welcome back to Chuck’n Comics where the geek is chic…always. Today I’d like to jump in the TARDIS and ride all timey-whimey back a few years to the release of Brian K. Vaughn’s Y: The Last Man Vol. 1. Y, the first volume in the graphic novels, begins the story of what if all the men on earth died. What was once a lewd sexual fantasy shared by many adolescent boys is brought to the harsh light of reality in an amazing story that grabs you from the first page.
Taken from Vertigo’s website: “Written by Brian K. Vaughan (Lost, PRIDE OF BAGHDAD, EX MACHINA) and with art by Pia Guerra, this is the saga of Yorick Brown—the only human survivor of a planet-wide plague that instantly kills every mammal possessing a Y chromosome. Accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, Yorick travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he’s the last man on earth.”
BEYOND HERE…LIE SPOILERS!
The writing is extremely good and the story well executed. I haVE read somewhere, I can’t remember now, that some labeled this one a page turner and by jove, they couldn’t be more correct. It is a hard book to put down. The rise of the Amazons, the re-establishment of the government and the fight that ensues. We’re talking literally fighting here. Dems and Republicans sporting rifles looking to gain control of the presidency type of rooting-tooting shooting fighting.
Then there is the discovery of Yorick. His being the only Y chromosome walking around the planet and the reaction is far far from any male teenagers fantasy. There are bounties, attempts to imprison him, hunting him down and very quick scenes that are very a la The Fugitive.
The books grabs you. It pins you down and keeps you in submission, a willingly prisoner to its story. Let’s just say I like it a lot and if you haven’t read it yet, please do so.
