Obsessions: ‘The Big Lebowski’

The Dude Comes to Blu-RayBy Katie McLaughlin, Source: CNN.com

Achievers, raise your White Russian tumblers because this “Obsessions” is for you.

Do you hate the Eagles? Do you bowl? Compulsively drink White Russians (er, Caucasians)? Is your only form of identification a Ralph’s Value Club card? Got a rug that really ties the room together? You’re not alone, man.

When the Coen brothers’ “The Big Lebowski” hit theaters in 1998 it was, well, a gutter ball, earning just $17.5 million. The film starred Jeff Bridges as “The Dude,” John Goodman as Vietnam vet and Judaism convert Walter, Julianne Moore as feminist artist Maude, Steve Buscemi as loyal pal Donny and John Turturro as bowling rival/pedophile “The Jesus.”

But the Achievers (the fans of the movie) eventually found it, on VHS and then DVD and now Blu-ray, making it the cult phenomenon it is today.

Ridley Scott Ready To Direct New Version Of Seminal Sci-Fi Film ‘Blade Runner’

By MIKE FLEMING, Source: Deadline.com

After revisiting his classic Alien with the upcoming 3D Fox film Prometheus, Ridley Scott is committing to direct and produce a film that advances his other seminal and groundbreaking science fiction film. Scott has signed on to direct and produce a new installment of Blade Runner. He’ll make the film with Alcon Entertainment, producing with Alcon partners Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. This would be the most high profile project for Alcon since The Blind Side. They got control of the franchise earlier this year, but it’s a whole different ballgame with Scott at the helm. Dynamite Entertainment has signed a comprehensive licensing agreement with Conde Nast for comic books based on one of the most popular cultural icons in comics – The Shadow! “We are pleased and excited to entrust The Shadow to the capable, creative hands of Dynamite Entertainment,” said Jerry Birenz, licensing attorney for Conde Nast. “We look forward to a continuation of the long tradition of The Shadow in comic books, and the enjoying of the new adventures and experiences Dynamite Entertainment will bring us.”

Want a Wonder Woman movie? Better hope that Logan’s Run is a hit!

Wonder Woman counting on Logan's Run?? No Way!!By Kevin Coll, source: Blastr.com

Drive director Nicolas Winding Refn has been pitching a dream adaptation of Wonder Woman over the past year, and he may get his chance—but only if his current production of Logan’s Run is successful.

“I would love to make Wonder Woman,” he said. “And I also think that Christina Hendricks would be the perfect Wonder Woman, but Warner Bros. haven’t called yet. But I’m getting closer with Logan’s Run. I think someone said to me in a meeting that if I get Logan’s Run right, then I’ll get Wonder Woman.”

We Don’t Know Who The Crow Is, But It’s Not Bradley Cooper Any More

by Hannah Shaw-Williams, Source: Bleeding Cool.com

My guess? He saw a sketch of the make-up he was going to have to wear and fled the building.

Bradley Cooper isn't the Crow

No, apparently it’s down to “scheduling conflicts”, and here’s the kicker: the scheduling conflict in question is the upcoming adaptation of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, which is being helmed by the director of the original Crow movie, Alex Proyas. Is it coincidence, or something more? Proyas has been down on the remake of his film from the very beginning. In an interview with DigitalSpy.com, he had this to say:

Superman and Batman on the Big Screen???? Doubt itBy Kevin Coll, Source: Blastr

Marvel has set the bar high when it comes to superhero team-up films, what with The Avengers ready to make superhero movie history next year, which leaves DC to play catch-up with its own strategy of combining big-name characters into one film project.

The latest rumor floating around now—which comes via Think McFly Think—is that sources say that the “studio is also quietly developing a Batman/Superman team-up movie.”

Johnny Depp’s Lone Ranger shut down (Blame John Carter and Oz!)

The Lone Ranger no more?By Don Kaye, Source: Blastr.com

It seems that not even the presence of Johnny Depp can guarantee that a big-budget movie will actually get made these days.

According to Deadline, Disney has canceled The Lone Ranger, which would have starred Depp as Tonto and Armie Hammer (The Social Network) as the title character. Supposedly Disney shut the movie down because of budget issues: They wanted it to cost $200 million, but the filmmakers could only get the price down from $250 million to a mere $232 million.

The movie, which was supposed to come out in December 2012, would have reunited Depp with director Gore Verbinski, who worked with the actor on the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who produced all the Pirates flicks.
