The next Star Trek movie will not open in June 2012, it has been reported.

The sequel to 2009′s Star Trek was originally slated for release on June 29, 2012, but Deadline now reports that Paramount has given that date to G.I. Joe: Retaliation in order to allow writers more time to work on the new Star Trek.

JJ Abrams has – according to the website – committed to directing the film, though this has yet to be officially confirmed. The Lost creator apparently plans to devote himself to working with screenwriters Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof in order to complete the script in time for a late 2012 or summer 2013 release.

Abrams confessed in June that the Star Trek sequel might miss its scheduled release date, saying that his current priority is to make sure the film’s story is good.

Meanwhile, Lindelof admitted in a recent interview that he is feeling the pressure to write a great sequel to Star Trek.

Simon Pegg, who played Enterprise engineer Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott in Star Trek, told Digital Spy last month that the new Star Trek film will begin production this year.
